There are several reasons why someone might require oral surgery, including impacted wisdom teeth, tooth extraction due to severe decay or damage, dental implants, treatment of oral infections, and oral cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Oral surgery is typically performed under local or general anesthesia to ensure that patients do not feel pain during the procedure. After the surgery, some discomfort and swelling are common, but pain can usually be managed with prescribed medications and proper post-operative care.
The duration of oral surgery depends on the specific procedure being performed. Simple extractions may take just a few minutes, while more complex surgeries such as wisdom tooth extraction or dental implants can take an hour or more.
Like any surgical procedure, oral surgery carries some risks. These may include infection, excessive bleeding, nerve damage, prolonged numbness, dry socket (after tooth extraction), and adverse reactions to anesthesia. However, these risks are relatively rare, especially when the surgery is performed by a qualified oral surgeon.

Recovery time varies depending on the type and complexity of the surgery. In general, most patients can expect some swelling and discomfort for a few days following the procedure. Many Oral Surgery procedures are covered by medical or dental insurance; however, it depends on the procedure and your particular plan limitations. We recommend you contact your insurance company to determine any available coverage information. Our staff is happy to assist you with any other insurance questions you may have.
We accept most dental insurances, but are currently only in network with the following insurances: Ameritas, MetLife, Delta Dental, and Guardian.
( We are also in-network with Aetna, MetLife, Principal, Physicians Mutual, and Standard. However, to be eligible, your card must display the Ameritas logo. )
Depending on the type of surgery you need, your consultation could occur the same day as your procedure, or may require a separate consult and surgery visit. You may also need a panoramic x-ray to get a full view of the teeth and surrounding structures. This imaging may be different from the x-ray you provide from your general dentist.
During your consultation, your Oral Surgeon will review your x-rays, medical history, and discuss these findings to formulate the best treatment plan with you. You will also be able to speak with one of our Treatment Coordinators to discuss insurance, payment options, and scheduling.
If you are currently under the care of a General Dentist, it is ideal that you receive a referral so that we can maintain communication about your care and treatment with our practice. In addition, some insurances require proof of medical necessity to cover your treatment, and a referral can be used as proof of necessity.
We also accept referrals from any treating provider rendering you dental care.
Post-Operative care is very important. The most important thing you can do after surgery to minimize complications and aid your recovery is to follow the post-operative instructions given to you by your Oral Surgeon. We recommend that you have at least 2-3 full days with limited physical activity to rest and recover. Swelling can be present approximately 7-10 days following surgery.
