Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth, or third molars, normally come in between the ages of 17 and 25. Wisdom teeth that are able to grow in completely without creating pain may not need to be extracted, however 90 percent of people have at least one impacted wisdom tooth that is unable to break through the gum because there is not enough room.
An impacted wisdom tooth can damage neighboring teeth or become infected. In addition, the area around an impacted tooth can invite bacteria that lead to gum disease. In some situations, a cyst will form around the base of the tooth.
Your Oral Surgeon can evaluate the position of wisdom teeth with X-rays and an oral examination to determine if there may be present or future problems. Patients should generally be evaluated in the mid-teen years. Studies have shown early evaluation and treatment result in the best outcome for patients.
